You know that feeling you get in late summer where you wonder why people are looking at you like they’ve just seen a ghost? Yeah, it means you gotta go get some sun. On the tan scale, I’m sitting somewhere between translucent jellyfish and death warmed up. It’s been a rough summer full of rain, more rain, sinkholes, flooding, and rain. Miserable beyond imagination, yes. But, with my travels going to the Low Country, I’m hoping for at least a few days of sunshine and the chance to get some tanlines going.
We’re breaking into the mixtapes slowly, with some of my favorites from the past couple of years. A few highlights though to get your musical UV Rays sped up:
Real Estate: Don’t even think about making a summer mix that doesn’t include this band. Just – NO – no…no. Chosen first in the mix for its quintessential chillness and easygoing cadence, Real Estate has become one of my definitive Summer Bands. Most of my friends are sick of “Days,” but I’m not. Go forth and deal, friends.
Tame Impala is like that chugging rock n’ roll band that went on so many tours with the Beatles that the sound eventually made its way into their repertoire. Saw them at The Orange Peel in February and can confidently file them under Top 10 Shows of The Year.
Black Moth Super Rainbow: or as I would like to call, the band of all genres. Psych-rock-shoegaze-weirdness that completely fits a spliff and a sunny day.
What are some summer songs that make you want to get drunk on a beach or float down the river? Tell me.
