It’s not just about the runway remixes anymore. New York Fashion Week is all about the soundtrack that plays outside the tents: the chatter, the incessant clicks from photographers and the general chaos of fashion’s parade of pretty and pretty wild.
Already we’re getting a feel from NYFW 2013 for what colors are going to send fast-fashion retailers into a pre-production hot flash. Red, as seen by Creatures of the Wind in both subtle floral prints and a striking monochrome look from ZAC Zac Posen, is coming through in more than just our favorite shade of lipstick. Spring is going to be brighter this year thanks to a wave of prints for BCBG Max Azria, the Gwenittude of Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B., and all the yellow that ZAC Zac Posen had to offer. I haven’t had the chance to scroll through all the collections yet, but Jason Wu’s minimal x maximal has me excited already.
To kick off the entire fashion month spanning dozens of countries, hundreds of shows, and thousands of opportunities to get the perfect street-style shot of Cara Delevigne or Anna Della Ruso, I had to make a mix. The days where fashion show music was dictated by a cliche of “stomp stomp” music is long gone. Never one to make fun of itself, designers and show producers make decidedly cool moves towards their show’s soundtrack with the same energy put into curating the collection look by look. Fashion is a sensory experience, so why would you ever leave out sound? EXACTLY. This mix is a combination of stuff you would hear on the runway, the after parties, and between the shows.
Say a show starts at the ass-crack of dawn. Your coffee or yerba matte latte ain’t gonna get your Charlotte Olympia heels out the door, babes. Anna Lunoe is your adrenaline anthem to get you from show to show and keep you away whilst watching look after look pass through the lens of your iPhone 5 and generate hashtags like a pro. Bondax “Gold,” and a K-Flay remix of Oh Land’s “White Nights” will make those minimal shows seem so much more dynamic and wondrous. I picked Die Antwoord “Broken” to simulate the wait-time where you’re hypothetically scrambling to snag a picture with Anna Wintour or your favorite blogger.
Speaking of bloggers, Drake “Started From the Bottom” is dedicated to everyone who’s hustlin’ the street style photobombs, sneaking into shows and peddling everything they’ve got to be recognized and network amongst the greats. You do you, girls/boys. You. Do. You.
Making the rock rounds in the mix is Thee Oh Sees, who so epically soundtracked Heidi Slimane’s critically acclaim/shamed collection for Saint Laurent Paris. It’s 22 minutes! OH MAN, that’s a lot of chill-wave rock guitar. But you need it, yes YOU. Take in the amplified endorphins of Sic Alps, Majical Cloudz, The Ventures, and La Luz “Damp Face.”
Magic Man kicks it back into an upbeat after party mode, rounding out with a little Crystal Stilts and Haim, a Joan Jett and dare I say Shania Twain sounding girl group? It’s too cool, I can’t. What we can do is end this mix with an Oh Land song and then we can start the adventure of fashion week all over tomorrow.
